The library has the following volunteer positions available:
Homework Help Volunteer
The Pekin Public Library is seeking interested and qualified volunteers to provide K-6th grade homework help to give support, assistance, and encouragement to children who need a little help with their homework.
This is two month pilot program from which we hope to determine the level of need in the community, and what the best times/days are for parents and students.
Where: Youth Services Department
When: Tuesdays 3:30-6:30pm and Thursdays 5:00-8pm
Begins: Training for volunteers begins January 16th; Homework Help begins February 1st
Ends: March 31st. Program evaluation with recommendations for the 2012-13 school year to follow.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
Assist children one-on-one and or in small groups with assignments in math, social studies, and other topics, providing direction, clarity, and instruction.
Promote the use of library resources by referring children to Youth Services staff when appropriate.
Encourage the use of the library’s subscription service for online homework help Tutor.com, which is available for students to use both from a home computer and library computers.
Required skills: Strong commitment to working with children, Friendly and approachable manner, Good computer skills are helpful
Notes: raining will be provided in the use of library resources. Volunteers must commit to at least one shift per week for the duration of the pilot program.

Friends of the Library
One of the best ways to volunteer is to join the Friends of the Library. The Friends are always looking for volunteers to help in the Book Sale Room
This organization is for people who believe in the library and wish to support its work. Your contribution is an investment in the quality of library facilities and services. Membership is open to all.
What the Friends Do
Raise funds to purchase special materials and equipment not provided for in the regular budget.
Sponsor library programs.
Encourage volunteer opportunities within the library.
Focus public attention on library needs and services.
Promote the enjoyment and use of the library.
